A Letter from the Board Chair
Since 2003, Miss Ruby’s Kids has dedicated funding, personnel, and leadership to improving the opportunities for educational success to children and their families in Georgetown County, South Carolina.
We do what we do well: home visits to promote early childhood literacy for qualified families with two- and three-year olds; support for early literacy instruction in home-based childcare facilities; and mentoring for graduates of our two-year home visitation program once they enter school.
Why do we focus on these areas? The research is clear: Helping parents, especially those who live in poverty, learn how to interact appropriately with their children – read to them, listen to them, communicate appropriately with them, turn off the television and video games – and pairing a mentor with each child as that child enters school will significantly impact the potential negative consequences, such as dropping out of high school before graduation, teen pregnancy, and adolescent and young adult crime resulting in incarceration.
Miss Ruby’s Kids could not achieve its goals without the commitment of its staff, its Board, and, most importantly, its volunteers, who are the force that create our energy. We depend on our mentors to visit their children in the schools, our committee members who lend their expertise and experience, and the very special members of our Garden Party committees who work so diligently to raise funds for our work.
We are here for the families and children. Won’t you join us?
