The Education Mentor Program

In January of 2009 Miss Ruby’s Kids launched its school-based Education Mentor Program at Waccamaw Elementary School. We were able to serve 13 of our program graduates with mentors for the remainder of that school year. We are well on our way to meeting our goal of serving all of our graduates in the Georgetown County Schools.

The flexibility of our mentors helps make the program successful. Mentors are able to serve their mentees in a way that the children will benefit the most. Once the mentors have gotten to know their mentees and their needs, they are able to plan activities that will support them.

After the teacher and the mentor decide on the best day and time for the visits to take place, the mentors begin their journey of getting to know the mentees. Mentors work with the teachers during this time to help determine the children’s needs and how to structure their visits. Examples of activities that mentors and children share include working on social skills during lunch-time visits, reading in the library, working on incomplete classroom assignments, taking a walk, working on art activities, going on school field trips, and having tea parties.
